Green lumber is classified as wood with moisture content higher than 19%. Green lumber is generally less expensive than treated lumber, and is softer due to its higher moisture content. It is also easier to cut and nail than seasoned wood. However, working with green wood presents many challenges.
Due to its high moisture content, green wood is not recommended for construction uses in humid areas of the world. Wood with high moisture content tends to shrink, causing gaps between joined pieces, possible mold growth and unexpected warping. However, builders in arid regions such as Arizona, Nevada and Southwest California are able to use greener lumber because the wood will reach equilibrium moisture content more quickly, mitigating most of those risks.
