MTE’s Softwood Species:
Softwood vs Hardwood
The difference between softwoods and hardwoods is the density of the wood and the type of tree they are cut from. Hardwood typically comes from deciduous trees which lose their leaves annually where softwood is usually cut from conifer trees such as pine which typically maintain their color all year.
As far as density, softwoods are typically easier to cut, but this also makes them easier to scratch, which is unappealing for furniture and trim, but a cheap option for construction. Hardwoods tend to be much more beautiful and harder to damage, although all wood is susceptible to scratches.
Softwood Lumber Properties
Trees like Pine or Hemlock are perfect for carving due to their soft nature but are also a cheaper option for the construction of homes or buildings. When used for exposed projects, this wood is typically treated so it will be resistant to rotting and water damage. Construction and wood toymakers(such as Doodletown Toys) are popular clients of ours for these wood species
