PBS Highlights MTE as a Leader in Sustainable Forestry
PBS Terra recently featured the Menominee Nation’s sustainable logging efforts in their short YouTube documentary, Can Ancient Wisdom Save the Forests? In the film, Host Baratunde Thurston details how while forests across the world have been devastated by overlogging, the 230,000 acre Menominee Forest in Northern Wisconsin continues to thrive.
The Menominee Tribe’s remarkable success stems from following the instructions of Chief Oshkosh (1795-1858):
"Start with the rising sun and work toward the setting sun, but take only the mature trees, the sick trees, and the trees that have fallen. When you reach the end of the reservation, turn and cut from the setting sun to the rising sun and the trees will last forever."
Blending technology and tradition to keep the health of the forest at the forefront of their logging operations, the Menominee Tribe produces some of the most sought-after wood in the world and remains ever-focused on preserving tomorrow. Watch the PBS Terra feature to learn more about the Menominee Tribe’s sustainability practices, rooted in community and respect for the land.
