SCOPE OF WORK:
For 75% of the year, assist THA Forester with implementation and administration of timber harvest and assist with the management, development and protection of the forest. The remaining 25% of the year will consist of assistance in various departments when needed at Forestry (marking, inventory, garlic mustard surveys, etc.).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must have the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the following:
- DNR Forestry Best Management Practices and MTL Wetland Ordinances.
- Forest Management Plan and Reservation geography.
- Awarding procedures for spring and fall.
- Various tree species and tree grade.
- Proper felling and bucking techniques.
- Assist with administering timber harvest activities.
- Conducting pre-harvest inspections for assigned awarded units to ensure the unit is ready for harvest.
- Monitor logging contractor performance by periodic site audit to ensure adherence to contract provisions, ensure that treatment meets prescription requirements, and write inspection reports.
- Working knowledge of provisions of the logging agreements.
- Must ensure logging crews follow required safety practices
- Must communicate with logging contractors and crew about necessary information regarding contract provisions, silviculture goals and objectives.
- Must be able to deal with logging contractors and crew in a professional manner.
- Assist in the allocation of pulpwood delivery tickets to contractors.
- Process, monitor and audit forest products, scale tickets and accounts payable system to ensure proper credits to specific contractors.
- Scaling pulp, and scaling and grading saw logs.
- Assist in the training of loggers on optimizing grade.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in extreme hot, cold, dusty, humid, bug infested, poison oak & ivy, rough terrain, and other undesirable environmental conditions. Requires extensive walking, climbing, bending, and operation of equipment. Required to wear appropriate safety apparel and equipment and comply with all safety policies and practices of MTE. Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a minimum of three years experience in a forestry management operation, certification of completion for all four levels of chainsaw safety training and the ability to provide basic chainsaw in house training. Working knowledge of the MTE Forest Management Plan, forest silviculture and Reservation geography is preferred. Skills in interpersonal relations, felling/skidding techniques, log scaling and grading and pulp scaling is preferred. Must possess good work ethic with excellent work attendance and be a team player.
