These aerial images were acquired on July 25th and 26th by Airborne Data System, INC (Wabasso MN). The 1 meter multispectral (Blue, Green, Red and Near-Infrared bands) were used to assess damage and delineate areas for salvage.
Stop #1: Prior to the blowdown this site was a mature White Pine shelterwood stand with approximately 50% crown cover. As this photo shows close to 100% of the stand was destroyed leaving less than 1% of the crown cover. The aerial image shows the damage areas in lighter shades of green. Almost no tree crowns are visible in the damage areas compared to the surrounding stands.

Below are ground photos of the damage within the aerial photo above.

Stop #2: This site was a mature Northern Hardwood stand prior to the storm consisting of Red Oak, Sugar Maple and White Ash trees. These photos show the tangled and sporadic nature of the windstorm. Numerous trees were either twisted, bent or snapped off. The aerial image shows the photo location with the damaged area circled. Notice the opening in the canopy in the damaged area compared to the surrounding stand.
